Science City of Muņoz Receives UNDP- Galing Pook Foundation

The Science City of Muņoz has been selected by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Galing Pook Foundation as one of the Ten (10) Outstanding Local Government Units for their pioneering efforts on the localization and substantial accomplishments and achievements on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Special Citation on Local Capacity Innovations for the MDGs was received by Mayor Nestor L. Alvarez and conferred by Vice-president Noli de Castro in an awards ceremony held on October 16, 2006 at Marikina City. The Awards Ceremony was the culminating event of the whole day international campaign by the United Nations called "Stand Up Against Poverty, Stand Up for the MDGs" (Tumayo Tayo Labanan ang Kahirapan, Tuparin ang MDGs).

The Special Citation on Local Capacity Innovations for the MDGs recognizes past winners of Galing Pook that have adopted and continuously demonstrated, widened, replicated, and/or institutionalized capacity development approaches and innovations.

The citation acknowledges capacity development initiatives, which are able to in effect be a factor to the attainment of the MDGs. Specifically, the special citation recognizes local programs that have helped boost local government or community capacities, either in the form of a policy, program, project, process or organizational intervention and contributed to specific MDG targets.

The award program remains faithful to the engagement of a multi-level rigorous screening process- spearheaded by Citation Screening Committees. The screening committee is composed of distinguished individuals who represent a healthy diversity of views, gender, geographical location and technical expertise.

Today, people from all walks of life say that community leaders can enter any office in the City Hall to seek help or make suggestions. There is respect and harmonious relations between the city's executive and legislative offices.

Muņoz has truly evolved from a fourth-class municipality to a modern and progressive science community.
